How to Measure Yourself for a Custom Prom Dress

Posted by Alice Jerry on

One of the biggest advantages of ordering from Promfast is the ability to get a dress made to your exact measurements. A custom-sized dress fits your body perfectly — no awkward gaps, no pinching, no last-minute alterations. Here's our step-by-step guide to measuring yourself accurately for your custom prom dress.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape (not a metal ruler)
  • A friend to help (measurements are more accurate with assistance)
  • Form-fitting underwear or a strapless bra
  • A pen and paper to record your measurements

The 9 Measurements You Need

1. Bust

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it parallel to the floor. Don't pull it too tight — you should be able to breathe comfortably. Record in inches.

2. Waist

Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually about 1 inch above your belly button. Keep the tape snug but not tight.

3. Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, usually about 7–9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.

4. Shoulder to Shoulder (Back)

Measure straight across your back from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other. This measurement helps ensure the dress fits your shoulder width correctly.

5. Hollow to Floor (No Shoes)

Stand up straight with your feet together. Measure from the hollow at the base of your throat (the small dip at the center of your collarbone) straight down to the floor. Do this without shoes for accuracy.

6. Full Height (No Shoes)

Measure your full height from the top of your head to the floor without shoes.

7. Shoe Height

If you plan to wear heels, measure the height of your prom shoes. This helps us determine the correct dress length.

8. Arm Length (for long sleeve dresses only)

Bend your arm slightly and measure from the top of your shoulder, around the elbow, to your wrist.

9. Armhole (for long sleeve dresses only)

Measure around the fullest part of your upper arm, just below the armpit.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Measure twice — Always double-check each measurement before recording it
  • Stand naturally — Don't suck in your stomach or hold your breath while measuring
  • Use a mirror — Check that the tape is parallel to the floor for bust and hip measurements
  • Wear the right undergarments — Measure in the bra or shapewear you plan to wear under your dress
  • Ask for help — Having a friend take your measurements is much more accurate than doing it yourself
